Acacia mearnsii - Black Wattle

Tree with dark green, feathery foliage, and pale yellow, globular, flower
Up to 12m
Tolerates full sun-full shade
Dry to moist soils

​Features – Butterfly, Aboriginal uses
Gum was collected from cuts or fissures on the trunks and rolled into balls. It was used for eating, to make drinks and mixed with ashes to make cement. An infusion of the bark and water was used to treat indigestion. Weapons were made from the wood.
​Food for caterpillars of Blue Jewel and Common Imperial Blue.

Acacia melanoxylon - Blackwood

Moderately dense, grey-green, spreading tree, with clustered, globular, pale yellow flowers, on branched stalks.
Up to 30m
Prefers part shade, tolerates full sun.
Moist soils

Features – Butterfly, Aboriginal uses
​
Bark heated over fire then infused in bathing water was a treatment for rheumatism. Clubs, shields and spearthrowers were made from the wood.
Food for caterpillars of Blue Jewel, Common Imperial Blue, Grampians Hairstreak and Silky Hairstreak.

Allocasuarina littoralis - Black Sheoak

Banksia integrifolia - Coastal Banksia

Tolerates full sun

The nectar from the banksia cones was used to make drinks. Paint brushes came from the stamens. Cones also attract birds and bees

Eucalyptus ovata - Swamp Gum

A medium to large tree often branching quite near to the ground. Bark dark brown and sub-fibrous on lower trunk, smooth and mostly pale grey on upper trunk and branches.
Up to 8-30m
Tolerates full sun-part shade
Moist, swampy soils

Features – Bird, Butterfly

Provides nectar and seed for birds, food for caterpillars. Koalas eat the leaves


Eucalyptus pauciflora - Snow Gum

A tree usually branching at or near the base bark smooth, shed in patches and strips,
colour varying from white to cream

Up to 10m
Tolerates full sun-part shade
Dry to moist soils does not tolerate salt winds.
An uncommon species in southern Victoria, it is normally restricted to alpine regions.
